WHAT CAN I DO

1) DEFEND OUR RIGHTS

Brush up on our Bill of Rights and Constitution. The Bill of Rights is one of the three founding documents for the United States of America. It is imperative that we defend our freedoms most importantly our First Amendment which reads, "freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." and Fifth Amendment which states no person shall "be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law." Read the entire Bill of Rights

Let's be clear. These rights are not just for citizens but for all individuals or persons regardless of legal status.

Support the ACLU, a non-profit and non-partisan public interest law firm that fiercely defends the US Constitution and does not receive any government funding. I am positive they have an overworked and exhausted staff that needs help.

2) VOTE IN

The next election is crucial to keeping our democracy intact. Get involved in helping candidates get elected who you believe and trust. It is not just about "voting out" people, we need to "vote in" people who have been vocal about standing up for human rights. Vote in strong minded individuals who have good values & morals.

3) PEACEFUL PROTESTS

If no one shows up, they think no-one cares. Show up, to show you care. Use your right to peacefully protest just don't get crazy. If you are unable to go to a local protest write to your representatives. Find my representatives

Do not bring flags from other countries. The U.S. flag code states that the flag should be displayed with the union stars up, except when used as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. Bring the USA flag and carry it upside down to signal a sign of distress. Do not destroy the flag.

4) STAY INFORMED

Gather information by watching unbiased news sources such as The Associated Press (AP), PBS News Hour and for an international perspective watch the BBC News.
It's important to stay informed but it is also just as important to limit your intake and take a break from 24/7 news and social media.

5) GIVE BACK

Support nonprofits who are helping to uplift people by donating, volunteering or sharing your expertise. These are 5 nonprofits that provide vital services:

Feeding America: The largest charity working to end hunger in the US through a network of food banks or give directly to your Local Food Bank

Catholic Charities: Provides all around human services as well as being the largest provider of immigrant and refugee services in the USA. Find a Local Agency

Pro-Bono Legal Services: Pro-bono or free legal services are vital for people and their families who have been detained. Find your Local Pro-Bono Legal Services

Habitat for Humanity: Helps to build more prosperous and vibrant communities by making sure everyone has a safe, affordable place to call home.

The Salvation Army: Addresses all around human services for those in need. Find your Local Branch

6) KEEP THE PEACE

Have respectful, productive conversations with people who may think differently than you, listen and don't put them down. This may be very difficult because many times it is our own family but remember even the new Pope has a MAGA brother.
Pray, meditate or send positive vibes to others who are fighting the fight. It means a lot to these social justice warriors, service providers and legislators to receive a thank you message or note every once in while.

Take time for yourself. Turn off the news, do breathing exercises, take a walk in nature, go to a local arts and culture event or do whatever makes you smile to keep your spirit alive.

Remember to love one another and yourself.
